About Me
Who I am
Twenty years ago the mother of my daughters asked me why I chose a career in the financial industry. She was trying to figure out what about my job brought any amount of joy or personal satisfaction within a field that I often described as a rat race. I stumbled on my answer for a few moments before giving her the simplest and truest response: I like to help people. I like to help people plan for their future. I like to help executives plan for the future and reduce their tax liability. I like to help parents with special needs children. I like to help other entrepreneurs build empires while chasing their dreams. Simply stated, I like to help... That's who I am at my core, and that desire is what drives every client interaction I have. That's who I am and why I do what I do.
I was born in the midwest and raised all over the country as I bounced around schools during the hardest time in life... the adolescent years! In fact, the first company I ever created as a preteen – in middle school - was based on the idea of selling hats to my peers. If I had to gauge the success of that company, I would have to admit I don't think I would have made it onto Shark Tank!
From the ages of 12 to 32, I opened up and started several products/companies. Some were moderately successful in the sense that I didn't technically lose money, and others were outright fails. But the common denominator was always this: if I had a solid idea and a willingness to do whatever it took to attempt to succeed.... then I had to see it through.
While still in college, I started a construction company that was successful. That success went to my head, and eventually humbled me. I thought if I could work in door to door sales I could be good at other door to door sales jobs, so I attempted to start a natural supplement company. It was a great lesson in marketing... needless to say, it was not so successful. I even tried my hand at helping my ex- wife cultivate a wedding planning company that was also not successful.
After college, I started an insurance and advisory firm. And while that post collegiate adventure was successful, I came to realize it lacked focus because the company tried to be everything to everyone.
Regardless of the failures, or the successes both small and big, I am an entrepreneur at heart, with a heart to help.
Where I've been
Over the course of my career in the finance industry the way I have helped people has shifted from a full menu of financial services designed to support everyone to a more tailored and specific approach designed to advise entrepreneurs and executives. While I began my career working for big box wealth management companies - supporting clients looking to plan for retirement, college savings, wealth accumulation and much more - today my companies provide a specialized ecosystem where clients can receive advice that integrates personal and business planning.
In 2016 I took the biggest leap of my professional (and quite frankly, my personal) life and started my next company so that everything this company would do, would be with the goal of helping people in mind. I turned what started out as a job into a true passion and a calling. November 1st 2016 Horizon Ridge Wealth Management was born out of a dream, a small office with an incredibly high rent, two computers, and pure unadulterated drive. Sleep would wait because dreams would not...
When the pandemic hit, like many small business owners I was unsure if my little brick and mortar would survive. But just like I advise my clients, shoot for the best and plan for the worst. Our pivot allowed us to not only survive, but to thrive. Out of the proverbial ashes came the new fire: an idea to help those with the most complex problems by turning complexity into simplicity. I realized Entrepreneurs and Executives were my kin, my peers, and those who needed help turning complexity into simplicity. And so we rebranded, spun off companies, and honed our craft to serve those individuals that wanted to leave a positive impact on their communities and a legacy for their families. Now I would be helping people, help people.
What I Do
Today I run multiple companies that provide a variety of business and financial advising, but all with the same original goal of simply helping people. Within every brand, and every business plan, the core is this: how will we create avenues for our clients to reach their goals? How do we simplify our client's most complex issues? Will our clients walk away with tools and resources to plan for their futures? Can we increase the number of successful business exits? We think the answer, to each of these questions, is YES.

The Hard Truth
What Your Peers Say
Well written, easy to follow, and incredibly helpful. It will change how you view your financial planning and goal setting! No matter what stage you are in your life, or what you think you know about your finances, this is a must read. Informative without being dry! Definitely not like a textbook. Full of the author’s personal style and humor. Worth so much more than you’re paying.

Traditionally, I'm not a podcast person, but The Entrepreneur's Adviser™ has changed that. I find myself genuinely looking forward to each new episode. The topics and discussions are relatable and easily apply to entrepreneurs regardless of where they're at on their entrepreneurial journey. As a serial entrepreneur myself, this show has helped me begin to find the missing pieces that, in the past, caused me to run and hide.

The author does a fantastic job of providing vital information by breaking it down to clear categories making the details more digestible. Jonathan is highly qualified and even with his numerous degrees and certifications, he genuinely loves to help people and is never condescending when explaining this "multifaceted approach" - in fact, the book was not only extremely informative, but his voice and heart shone and made the book an enjoyable read. Jonathan equips and empowers his readers by giving incredible insight and information: everything from explaining the difference between an "advisor" and an "adviser" to realizing if you're a "doer" or a "delegator" to creating a basic budget and balance sheet to more advanced difficult concepts like investing, taxes and estate planning. I highly recommend this book for everyone: whether you're just starting your financial plan or for seasoned investors who just want to understand more about their portfolios.

This podcast is great! I loved the thought process behind it and it motivates me to get out and finish projects I may not have thought doing!
BusinessMoments
I have read a number of financial books through the years. Many talk a lot about what I need to do to make more money. They get you excited about what to do until it is actually time to do it. So I'm motivated, ready to get going, but lack the knowledge for application! So I felt stuck feel frustrated sitting with my current position not feeling I could get out. When I heard about this book I was super very skeptical. First, I thought “This is probably like every other $20 book” ...except this guy is asking $400 for it instead. Second, I thought “This must just be a marketing gimmick and it really isn’t worth $400, the author just wants to market it that way”. But then I read and saw some reviews on other sites and was shocked to learn it was not written from a soapbox. The author supposedly wrote the book to be a “How To” guide to creating an entirely holistic financial plan - on your own or with a trusted advisor. His goal was to have the reader fire their advisor or hire someone who is more qualified to build a real plan. So, based on the reviews and a leap of faith I made the investment. Skeptical that I wouldn’t make my money back, I quickly learned I was wrong. Not only did I find great clarity in building my better future, but I was taught that it was not my fault that I am where I am today...the industry is rigged. I further learned some strategies, skills and techniques that will easily recoup my investment quickly BUT continue paying me significant dividends for many years to come. So I have a system now, and a true north with my finances. This book changed my outlook and mindset with money and my future. Without it I would probably still be skeptical, and in many other instances I still am, but not anymore with my finances. This book truly created my Master Plan.

I listened to the whole first season -- finished episode 18 on my walk this morning. Well done! Some eps were more useful to my situation than others, of course, and the ones on property settlement notes, alimony and child support were very useful indeed. Thanks for these. It is good to be reminded that others have walked this path before me, and I am not on my own in trying to figure it all out. As you say at the end of each episode -- one step and one day at a time.

As a 20+ year corporate financial planner I thought I knew how to manage my personal financial plan. After years of working towards my goals and seeing very little progress, I took a chance on this book and I’m glad I did. Everything about this book is helpful. It not only give you the topics you need to consider, it takes you one level down to give you a good understanding of why and how to move forward. It’s not a textbook, it doesn’t read like one or teach like one, which is part of what makes it so great. It’s well organized, well written with a personality of its own. I literally made the cost of the book back in 45 days from simple suggestions that will pay divends for years to come. It’s not a get rich quick scheme. If that’s what you’re looking for, look elsewhere. If you want a roadmap to a healthy financial future this is the book for you.
